Summer to Fall

I can never decide whether it's good or bad that at the heigh of summer I'm already thinking of fall. It's nice to look forward, but at the same time, I don't want to wish time away. Anyway,, this mindset—half in summer, half leaving it behind, shows in my recent work. These are some recent pieces; some light and summery and some more fall-ish. Choose to suit your mood. All items are available in my Etsy shop; click on each photo to buy.

Find Out What Really Happens at a Photo Shoot

Sometimes—not often, but sometimes—everything just works. That's what happened with my summer 2014 photo shoot.

It started when I saw a street style feature by my friend Christen on Alexandria Stylebook, the blog she produces. The model was the gorgeous redhead Candace Gibson. I'd been wanting to do something new with my next photo shoot and also had been looking for a pale redheaded model. Everything clicked into place; I needed Christen to take the photos and Candace to model. I contacted Christen; she was up for it! She contacted Candace; Candace was up for it! The wheels were in motion.

I got the jewelry for my summer collection together and then met Candace at  Kiskadee to borrow clothes for the shoot. I wanted a simple, casual look. We found the perfect ensemble—a flowy white tank top by Wilt and Level 99 distressed skinny jeans. Meanwhile, Christen was scouting locations and somehow managed to intuit exactly what I wanted, even though I couldn't clearly articulate what that was. "Industrial chic" is the best description I can think of, and she nailed it.

We arranged to meet early on a Saturday. The day was bright and crisp. I left at 7, stopped at Starbucks to pick up everyone's caffeine orders, swung by my intern Maddie's house, and headed to Old Town. Candace and Christen were there when we arrived—Candace looking unbelievably stunning in spite of the early hour. Christen started shooting, and her ease behind the camera was instantly apparent as she unhesitatingly transformed a dingy paint-stained step stool into a cool prop and then in the next shot balanced one foot on the edge of the stool to get the perfect angle. Each shot was better than the last, and we talked, laughed, and guzzled our coffees all the while. It was the most fun I've had in a long time.

The result? I'm not even going to say anything. I think the photos speak for themselves.

Love,

Ruth
